The Huskers looked like they could pull it off, until a 19-0 defeat at the hands of Arizona State in Tempe and the "flu"ke in the Big XII Championship game against Texas.  Ironically, the Huskers had beaten ASU the previous year in Lincoln 77-28, and demolished the Florida Gators 62-24 in Sun Devil Stadium in January in the '96 Fiesta.
